Memorialising the Holocaust: Transitional Memory in the Aftermath of the Shoah
H2.38
The challenges of Holocaust remembrance several generations on. What responsibility do we have and how do we negotiate the project of remembrance and memorialising in transition from one generation to another? How will we satisfy the call for remembering once survivors are gone? As a product of the distance of time is it appropriate to place the Holocaust in history as a pivotal event in the 20th century, or in the context of other genocides?

1.4 Billion Reasons
H2.35
Right now, 1.4 billion people in our world live in extreme poverty. Within a generation, we have the capacity to reduce this number to zero. To explain why an end to extreme poverty is possible, and the simple, everyday actions that can help bring this about, Jewish Aid educators will be presenting the award winning presentation: 1.4 Billion Reasons. Created by the Global Poverty Project to engage and inspire everyday Australians to join the movement to end extreme poverty, the presentation is built around five questions:
- What is extreme poverty?
- Can we do anything about it?
- What are the barriers to ending extreme poverty?
- Why should we care?
- What can we do?
Based on leading research, and endorsed by development and economics experts, 1.4 Billion Reasons is a must see presentation.

An Insider/Outsider Looks at Israel
H2.41
Having only visited his Israeli homeland once in 46 years since moving here in the mid-1960s, Sol Salbe was in a unique position to observe the country. His brain may have been rewired Australian but he still had his Hebrew skills. A combination of some serious observations about the code of Israeliness (the title of a recent book by Professor Gad Yair), some ultra-serious (racism), and some light-hearted (shopping at the Haifa Market).

The culture of commemoration in Germany has changed tremendously over the past few decades - from denial and oblivion to a sincere attempt to come to terms with our Nazi past. UNRWA and the Palestinian refugees
H1.26
Settling the outstanding issues of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict in negotiations will require both sides to forego the operational advantages of short-term calculations in favor of long-term strategic thinking. Propping up agencies like UNRWA, which reinforce Palestinian dependency and magnify the myths and falsehoods of the occupation/victimization narrative, is a poor strategic choice for both sides. For the Palestinians, it delays and stunts the growth and maturation of civil society and constructive nation-building; and for the Israelis, it legitimizes and enables those who would use UNRWA as a base for terror activities.

Eating Kosher Food to Maintain a Healthy Balance
HB40
Eating kosher foods can be healthy if you know how to choose wisely. Discover alkalising and acidifying foods and how getting the balance right can help you maintain a healthy life. A healthy balance begins with an understanding that as long as we are acid our body is in a state of degeneration causing immune deficiencies, inflammation and other health issues. What we strive for is to build up and regenerate at the same time, reducing as many stressors as possible. Diseases thrive in an acidic environment so foods need to be more alkalising to maintain health. Sandra will share with you information about which kosher foods support your health.
What does it mean to eat a healthy balance?

By the Holocaust's end, only 150,000 Jewish children were alive - a tiny fragment of the surviving remnant. Not surprisingly, they were considered 'the greatest treasures of the Jewish People'. Did Jewish organisations help them? If so, how? Some were claimed by a surviving parent or relative, others were orphans. How did they adjust to new families? How did their wartime years affect them? Family Ties: Marriage, Divorce and Halakha
H1.25
How does Jewish law respond to contemporary expectations about the status of women in matters of marriage and divorce? How much control does the rabbinate have when it comes to love, family and marital status? And what happens in Israel where religious and civil responses to marriage can't easily be separated?
This session provides some background on the issues that come into play under Jewish law including the conditions of marriage, the process of divorce and the status of women who are unable to obtain a divorce. It includes some personal responses and choices to the concerns about rabbinical involvement in matters of relationship status. The session will also discuss the way these issues are experienced in Israel, where the only option for marriage and divorce for Jewish Israelis is through an arguably increasingly stringent Orthodox rabbinate, and looks at the grassroots responses to this issue including for those to whom halakha is important but who are troubled or adversely affected by the status quo.

It's easy to take pot shots at religions and atheists, and most skirmishes between adversaries are more like predictable soap opera than stimulating debate. The Middle East without Zionism?: Imagining Counter-Factual History
H2.22
Much of the debate about the Arab-Israel conflict centres on 'What might have been'. In particular, a great deal of the Arab critique of Israel's existence centres on certain assumptions about what would have happened in the Middle East if Israel had never been established. This seminar is an attempt to subject those assumptions to what social scientists call a 'Counterfactual Thought Experiment' and see how well they stand up to realistic historical scrutiny.

The Post-Denomination Jewish Community
ACJC Level 8
As we journey through the twenty-first century is it time to review, rethink, re-envision and reconsider what we wish the dynamic of our Jewish communities to be? Join facilitators Gabbi Sar-Shalom and Tal Spinrad in a round table dialogue concerning the future shape of Jewish communities locally and globally. Has the time come to set aside political and financial territorial power struggles for the better good of the Jewish people? And does the traditional congregational formula have a place within a healthy, dynamic, mobile society where individuals expect choice? A must for anyone who has ever asked themselves the question, 'Is there a better way?'

History, Memory and the Meaning of Things
H2.35
The Hebrew word for memory, zakhor, is mentioned in the Bible over 150 times. Again and again we are impelled to remember - to seek connections with our past in order to construct our identities and give meaning to life in the present. In this session, we will consider the potential of objects - historical artefacts, artworks and the everyday things we surround ourselves with - to evoke, connect us with, and even reinvent, Jewish memory.

Neglected Origins of Modern Hebrew Literature
H2.38
How and where did modern Hebrew literature start? Dispelling the myth that Hebrew was revived in the 1880s, we will begin with writings by the Hasidim and their opponents from 1815-1830. Unlike the authors of the Berlin Enlightenment, these popular writers were able to capture scenes from everyday life and the impression of ordinary speech. We will read stories about the Ba`al Shem Tov and by Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav, contrasting them to Joseph Perl's Revealer of Secrets and I. B. Levinsohn's satires and parodies. Suggested readings from Hasidic and anti-Hasidic Hebrew.

The Complete Guide To The Kabbalah: How to Apply the Ancient Mysteries of the Kabbalah to Your Everyday Life
HB36
The Kabbalah is a practical system for understanding all aspects of our lives. Based on an effective map of consciousness called the Tree of Life, the Kabbalah has the potential to enhance the quality of life for individuals and the societies in which they live. Blending traditional teachings with psychological understanding, the Complete Guide to the Kabbalah reveals the mysteries of the Tree of Life. It explains how the Kabbalah can help you understand the connections between all the events, ideas, and relationships in your life; work from the heart as well as the intellect; open yourself to the richness of your own inner wisdom. I want to share with you Kabbalah texts written in Hebrew that ask deeply personal questions about the essence of an individual and the existence of a soul. The text offers an understanding of the place of evil, suffering, compassion, and joy in the full experience of divine love. The Kabbalah is presented as a universal pathway of the spirit. Coming from the West rather than the East, this book fills a long-awaited gap as it teaches an essential spirituality within the conceptual framework of the Judeo-Christian tradition.

Oh, the Places You'd Go! If Only You Were Adequately Prepared! (A no-holds-barred critique of education)

What is the true purpose of our schooling system? What have we come to expect from our educational institutions? But, must we continue to subscribe to such a bleak and tragic reality? We should hope not!
This session aims to expose the current formal Jewish school system with regards to its neglect of student development in many senses of the word. Ashes to Outcasts and Beyond: Cremation and the Modern Jew
H2.37
Mechanised cremation emerged in late nineteenth century Europe, and has since posed acute challenges for religions with longstanding earth burial traditions. Indeed, soon after this development, impassioned debates erupted among Jewish religious leaders as to the permissibility of the process, and whether traditional burial and mourning procedures should be followed when a cremation took place. The role of cremation in the Holocaust reframed the religious discussion. This lecture will demonstrate how Judaism's distinct interaction with cremation illuminates the vicissitudes of Jewish life and identity formation in unique and powerful ways.

Muslims and Jews in Scandinavia - a Strained Relationship
H1.26
The Nordic countries have traditionally been perceived as homogeneous welfare states with an open welcoming attitude and a very liberal mindset. But the picture is changing: an accelerated immigration especially from the Middle East has been met with a growing degree of unease, rejection, and fear. The Mohammed Cartoon Crisis in 2005-2006 with its images of burning Danish flags seemed to epitomise the clash of cultures and raised difficult questions about both the freedom of speech and the role of Islam in European societies: is Islamophobia the new antisemitism? Or is the real problem a burgeoning Muslim antisemitism threatening the local Jewish communities? The mass murder in Norway on 22 July 2011 showed in the most gruesome way how volatile the presumed idyllic model societies in Scandinavia are.

For many years the debate about gender and the Holocaust raged. On the one hand scholars argued that all Jews were slated for death, regardless of gender. The (im)possibility of Multiple Religious Identities
H2.35
In our 'DIY' world where people are free to pick and mix elements from a variety of religions to form their identities, are there limits to how far we can/should go? As Jews, where do we draw the lines for Jewish identity? When people describe themselves as 'BuJews' or 'Jews for Jesus', is what they are describing really possible, or is it a logical impossibility? This topic is the inevitable next stage in interfaith dialogue. Hasidic Tales, I. L. Peretz, and Modern Yiddish Literature

Modern Yiddish literature began paradoxically, in 1815, in the margins of the Hebrew tales that were published about the Baal Shem Tov and by Rabbi Nahman of Bratslav. These popular stories lie at the beginning of a new tradition that reached its pinnacle in the works of I. L. Peretz. We will look back at seminal hasidic tales before turning to Peretz's artful neo-hasidic fiction (1891-1900), translated by Ken Frieden in his anthology of Classic Yiddish Stories: 'Kabbalists,' 'Teachings of the Hasidim,' 'The Rebbe's Pipe,' 'If Not Higher!' and 'Between Two Mountains.'

Thinking Outside the Box: the Changing Role of the Jewish Day School
HB32
While communal leaders and academics debate the value and the future of our Jewish day school system, The King David School has quietly and actively begun trying to change the reality on the ground through the creation of the Centre for Living Judaism. The CLJ was conceived as a strategic partnership between the school, the Union for Progressive Judaism and Progressive Judaism Victoria and is a unified and comprehensive response to the challenges and opportunities that face Judaism in our region. Its aim is simply to develop activities, programs, resources and materials that can be used at The King David School and shared with individuals, congregations and communities locally, regionally, and in time, internationally as we seek to promote Jewish education and engagement.

Enclavist and the Messenger: Rabbi Aharon Kotler, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson and their Alternative Visions for Jewish Continuity
H2.35
The year 1941 witnessed the arrival in America of two refugee rabbinical figures destined to reshape the landscape of contemporary Judaism: Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson and Rabbi Aharon Kotler. Within a decade Schneerson was formally chosen as the Rebbe (central spiritual figure) of the Lubavitcher hasidic sect, while Kotler was widely acknowledged as the driving force in the renaissance of Lithuanian Orthodoxy. As outstanding representatives of hasidic and mitnagedic (non- or anti-hasidic) traditions, there were significant differences in their personal religious orientations. This lecture will highlight one of their sharpest divides - their polar visions of how to mould the future Jewish religious life.

The Challenge of Memory: Teaching the Holocaust through Film and Testimony
HB36
Almost seventy years after its conclusion, the Holocaust remains a watershed event in the modern Western experience. Studying the genocide creates a tension between the desire to forget, or disbelieve and a more powerful imperative to remember that which defies the imagination. The Demonisation of Israel
H1.25
For academic supporters of Palestine, Israel has become shorthand for all manner of evils. The language and imagery of the Holocaust is invoked not to remind people of what happened to Jews when they had no power but rather to focus attention on Palestinians as the rightful subjects of collective suffering. Moreover, equating the Holocaust with the Nakba (the term Palestinians use to describe the catastrophe of Israel's creation) is aimed at making Palestinian suffering motivate political action and provoke outrage at Israel as the alleged source of Palestinian distress.

Young Lions Jewish American War Fiction
ACJC Level 8
In 1948, the best seller list in America was dominated by four novels about the recent war by Jewish authors: Norman Mailer's 'The Naked and the Dead', Irwin Shaw's 'The Young Lions', Merle Miller's 'That Winter', and Stefan Heym's 'The Crusaders'.
My session will describe how these books shed light on the transformation undergone by Jewish American men through war service. Coming from a culture with a long history of distrusting soldiers, these novels delineated the struggles of Jewish men as they sought to change themselves into warriors. The Jewish American soldier as he is presented in all of these works embodies a new form of masculinity that combines intellectualism and self exploration with strength and toughness. These novels also document the stresses faced by many young Jewish men who for the first time had access to the 'broader America' beyond their ethnic neighbourhoods and found themselves living and working with non-Jews. A constant refrain in all these novels is that while many Jewish soldiers saw service as a way to become fully American, in the troops, Jewish men had to deal with daily antisemitic assaults from their fellow soldiers. I will show how these novels of 1948 chart the extraordinary pressures felt by Jewish American soldiers as they confronted enemies within the troops (antisemitic American soldiers) and without (the Nazi enemy). The Jewish soldiers that are the protagonists of these works act tough but are terrified of death, and their ability to voice their fears made them immensely popular and influential with a broad range of readers, heralding in the sensitive yet tough rebels that dominated male American culture in the 1950s.

Language of the Psalms: Ashrei

Most Jews who pray regularly know Psalm 145 (Tehillim 145) fairly well, for it is recited thrice daily. Not everybody knows, however, that the opening verses' thrice-repeated word "Ashrei" doesn't belong with the main body of the poem. Is Australia Racist? Prejudice, Tolerance and the Implication for the Jewish Community
H2.41
Interestingly, the word tolerance (sovlanut) does not appear in the Torah, certainly not in its own right. However, there are some passages that can be seen as teaching tolerance. The closest reference can be found in Vayikra chapter 19, verse 18 that stipulates "You shall love your neighbour as yourself", endorsed by Rabbi Akiva and Hillel. Yet for Jewish people whether we live in a tolerant or an intolerant society is of great importance considering the historic well established prejudice towards us over the ages. Is Australia a tolerant or intolerant society? And how tolerant are we as individuals and a community towards others different from us? Whether Australia is racist is debated regularly. Formal research and informal discussions about racial prejudice often conclude that Australia is indeed racist. In contrast, research about tolerance emphasises the positive nature of this debate. Research about tolerance to human diversity in Australia shows that 80 to 95% of people are in fact tolerant towards others different from them in creed and colour. However it does depend on whom and what we are asked to tolerate. We know that hate crimes do occur towards Jewish institutions and people and towards other communities. How does this compare to other countries? This session will elaborate further on the Biblical relationship to tolerance and consider what it means to be tolerant in theory and practice. It will also challenge you to think about how tolerant you are towards others different from you. Finally, it will discuss how promoting tolerance, rather than suppressing prejudice, is essential to the Jewish community.

Peace Process to Nowhere
H1.26
The so-called Middle East conflict has grown more rather than less intractable since Palestinian and Israeli leaders began their efforts to resolve it through negotiations. Indeed, almost two decades of negotiations have failed to convince Palestinian and Israeli leaders of a way to share the land and its resources. And in fact the core of the conflict is more about co-existing on the same land than just dividing it.
Perhaps the realisation of how many dreams would remain unfulfilled if the compromises necessary for an agreement were struck convinced politicians on both sides that resolving the dispute would be more costly and unpopular than perpetuating it.

Revisiting the Danish-Jewish Experience
H2.37
Jews enjoyed a comparably favourable status in early modern Denmark, and their path into Danish society as equal citizens was smoother than in many other places. The Jewish Enlightenment and the Reform movement struck roots early on. But in spite of the dramatic rescue during the Holocaust, antisemitism played a significant role in Danish society in the 19th and 20th centuries. What does the experience of Danish Jews tell us about the difficulties of modern European societies with immigration and multiculturalism?

The Myth of Silence: Survivors Tell a Different Story
HB36
There is an assumption among popular and scholarly observers that survivors were silent after the Holocaust; that they repressed their traumatic memories and channeled their energy into rebuilding new lives. It was not for decades the narrative continues, that many spoke for the first time. Many survivors, however, tell a different story emphasising that they tried to speak much earlier. My presentation draws from an array of evidence that challenges the accepted myth of post-war silence.
